Since early 80s,
the German Development Corporation (GTZ) framework has integrated components on resource
management in arid zones and desertification control which have been on the front
of its activities further
to the ratification and signature of the UNCCD
in the mid 90s. The technical and financial co-operation,
currently provided, supports over 250 projects accounting for a total volume of
commitments of about 1.5 billion Euros among which 25% support Asian countries.
GTZ
provides advisory services and back-up to ACSAD
to orient and expand its range of services. The achievements comprise improvement
of
ACSAD functions
and operations including demand-oriented method transfer to provide scientific and
technical advisory services to the countries of the Arab League. The corporation
has developed pilot methodologies for the identification of desertification prone
areas in the region, establishment of early warning systems and development of interactive
regional networks.
The Mission
GTZ provides technical and scientific support to develop
national strategies and to build national and regional capacities on conservation
of natural resources and rehabilitation of degraded land resources.
